Leonard Haines Obituary

Leonard Haines, age 89 of Colchester, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at the Elms Nursing Home in Macomb with his four girls by his side.

He was born September 1, 1933, in rural Colchester to Walter and Irene Thrap Haines.  Leonard spent his whole life in Colchester.  He met his wife, Shirley, at the Round-Up Roller Rink in Tennessee and they were united in marriage on May 15, 1955.  She preceded him in death on October 26, 2019.  Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and one sister.

Surviving to mourn his passing are four daughters: Cindy Haines, Colchester; Becky (Jim) Pumo, Colchester; Kim (Mike) Velasquez, Valparaiso, Indiana; Jennifer Haines, Colchester. six grandchildren: Wendy Royer, Macomb; Jeremy (Kamille) Royer, El Salvador; Chris (Breann) Pumo, Macomb; Anna (Matt) Hoenes, Maywood, Missouri; Scott Pumo, Sterling, Illinois; Miranda (Rob Redlark) Portage, Indiana; six great grandchildren: Jordan (Nikia) Ogle-Edom, Plainfield, Illinois; Jairon and Jairic Royer, Macomb; Lincoln James Pumo, and Ledger Haines Pumo, Macomb; Tate Matthew Hoenes, Maywood, Missouri; two great great grandchildren: Niko Ogle-Edom and Avery Ogle-Edom, Plainfield, Illinois, two sisters: Evelyn (Ben) Rockwell, Dade City, Florida, and Naomi Creasey, Woodstock, Illinois.

As the saying goes, Leonard was a “jack-of all trades, and a master of many”.  He could fix anything that was broken and was always tinkering or building something.  He built four houses for his family, a duplex, a day care building, and led a team to complete the First Christian Church in Colchester.

He enjoyed hunting and traveling to see the United States with his family on many summer vacations.  Colorado was always a favorite vacation spot for him and the family.

He spent many years traveling to work as a Union Steamfitter and plumber.  Leonard assisted in building several of the buildings at Western Illinois University.  He also owned and operated Len’s Plumbing and Heating for many years.

He as a man of great faith and has instilled this in his family and many friends.  His love for the Lord was evident by his optimistic outlook on the future of heaven.  He was a leader at the First Christian Church for many years and served as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Group leader and Chairman of the Board.  As you all know, Leonard could say some amazing prayers.
