Herschel Mourning passed away at home on June 5, 2018 in Colchester. He was born to William Henry and Nola Mourning on June 19, 1918 in Colchester. He married Isabel Rundle on September 18, 1939 in Keokuk, Iowa. Later in life he married Alice Flynn.
Herschel is survived by 1 son: William (Sauni) Mourning, 3 grandchildren: Samuel Mourning, Cassandra Butterworth, and Andrew Mourning, 4 great grandchildren: Devin Mourning, Kinley Mourning, Emily Mourning, and Olivia Mourning, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister: Vivian Beck, one brother in law: Keith Beck, his first wife Isabel and later in life, Alice.
Herschel spent majority of his working career drilling wells at area farms in west central Illinois. After retiring, Herschel and Isabel loved traveling all over the country with their grandchildren Cassi and Sam. He also was a private pilot for several years. While flying with Harry Clugston, they were involved in a plane crash but that didn't deter him from flying. He wound up owning 4 planes.
He enjoyed tinkering with anything he could get his hands on. Herschel loved going to yard sales and buying broken things just to fix them. He found a life size Appaloosa fiberglass horse that he had to have. He bought it for a whopping $20. Herschel continued to ride his bike into his mid nineties and work on roofs well into his eighties. He never stopped going. Herschel was a great man that knew no strangers. He was loved by all who met him and would talk your ear off for hours if he could. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
